SPIRAL

In 2018 I was commissioned to work in collaboration with landscape architect Fiona Atkinson, to create “Spiral” using some of the salvaged cast iron legs of the West Pier to create a new public space next to the I360. I created twenty five new castings which are integrated with uplighters to highlight the texture of the historic columns. The new decorative castings also reference the story of the West Pier, which was designed by Eugenius Birch in 1866, and was referred to as a “butterfly upon the ocean”.

The patterns were carved by hand in French Limewood, then cast in iron at the Swan Foundry in Banbury.
